JAPEX2023 : I won Domestic LV (82) with my Japanese Revenue exhibit!

Post by unechan »

My dear Stampboards friends and especially my dear BOB experts;

It is my honor to share my very good news; at the JAPEX2023 (58th Japan Philatelic Exhibition, Nov 3 - 5, Tokyo) I have had a honor to receive 82 points - that is domestic Large Vermeil (LV) - and Special Appraisal from Jury for my 3-frame exhibit entitled "Japan Hand Engraved Documentary Revenue, 5th Issue 1 Sen Black".

This was my very first attempt to participate in a competitive philatelic exhibition (domestic exhibition endorsed by FIP), and the result was totally unexpected.

I'd like to thank you all for your interest in Japanese revenue stamps, which is still a minor area in our philatelic activity, but I think I've managed to expose the fun and excitement of collecting and studying these often overlooked classics.

Thanks again, and I’m so proud to be the member of this fantastic community.

Well done sir! It took me ages to achieve a large vermeil and you managed it with your first exhibition showing!!

I hope that you received feedback from the judges regarding improving and expanding your exhibit.

Congratulations! I was at JAPEX 2023 for a total of an hour, and didn't get away from the 7th floor dealer booths before I had to leave. So, I didn't manage to see the exhibits. I'll make a point of it next year!

Congratulations.

Though it is difficult to see (and understand) much of the detail, it certainly looks a great exhibit. More and more international exhibitions are accepting exhibits with 1-3 frames. Perhaps international is the next step.

All the best with future outings.

Congratulations.

with LV on national level you, better said your exhibit, is qualified for FIP exhibitions, but FIP so far does not accept 3 Frame exhibits but this will change.
Having said that, the FIP exhibition EFIRO 2024 in Bucharest coming April does accept 2 and 3 frame exhibits.

Congratulations Hironobu/unechan

Revenue collections are by no means easy to put together and i believe are starting to become more popular, hopefully as time goes on more collectors will venture into revenues as well as postage stamps.

Dear all Stampboarders,

Thank you so so much for your kind words and encouragements !

I recently have received the written evaluation and comments from the jury, which was;

1) Treatment and Importance of the Exhibit : 24 points (max. 30)
2) Philatelic and Related Knowledge, Personal Study and Research : 30 points (max. 35)
3) Condition and Rarity: 24 points (max. 30)
4) Presentation: 4 points (max. 5)

The comments were mostly appraising the original studies and attempts of the exhibit, but not so much words on the possible improvement which I really have expected to hear... but based on the evaluation, improvement of the overall treatment and condition of the material, as well as adding more significant materials (including large blocks, unused multiples, reconstructed sheets) might be the major subjects for revision.

The written comment has highly rated the original study, including plate reconstruction "from the scratch" and compilation of engraving errors / plate flaws, which resulted to the special award (appraisal from jury).

Unlike the major Japan classic stamps (e.g. Dragon series and Cherry Blossom - "Sakura" series), full sheets of classic Japanese revenues are very scarce, and even for this common 5th Issue 1 Sen Black, no full sheet nor sheet photograph exist. So I had to reconstruct the two plates (5x10 stamps per sheet) using multiples, with a single clue that "Plate II, Pos.8 has a variety - one stroke missing in left value inscription". It took about 2 years and half to complete the job, and the two reconstructed sheets - interconnected by combination of multiples (to show that it's not a random assortment of stamps) - were indeed a highlight of the exhibit.

The original study on engraving error/plate flaw study was an outcome of the plate reconstruction work, which I managed to identify more than 10 new and significant errors/plate flaws (partially published on "Philatelist Magazine", Stampedia Co.).

Leaf#44, Multiple use on document, including engraving error (Plate II, Pos.8)

A notable comment I've received was on the description of the duty rates being applied to the usage. This is somewhat equivalent to describing the various postal rates used on postal covers, and is clearly noted in the SREV revenue as follows;
1.3.9. The different fiscal usages on documents showing how the issues were used, including the different cancellations, uses for different revenue purposes, and demonstrating and explaining the rules and stamp duty rates.

The jury's comment mentioned that there have been very few exhibits in JAPEX which did follow this in the past, and thus my exhibit was highly rated - here's an example of the explanations (apologies it's in Japanese).
Leaf#27, Two documents with 4 Sen franking but with different duty rates.

So lots of things learned from this experience, and thus managed to gain lots of clues for further improvement. I have commenced to extend the exhibit to 4-frame first, and planning to submit it to another domestic exhibition on next summer, and further extend to 5-frame to enter the JAPEX2024 on November next year, and then hopefully consider to apply for international FIP exhibits... long way to go, but it's so fun and exiting !

Thank you all again !
