Ireland 1935 2d Green Coil SG74b. Is it genuine?

Post by Kilcockabu »

Hi all.
I was going through a recent purchase of early Ireland stamps and came across this stamp.

The previous owner identified it a "possible SG 74b".
Given the rarity of this particular coil, I am more than sceptical and think it is either a forgery or else someone cut away the perforations on the sides accidently or deliberately.
However, I don't know enough about the stamp, so perhaps one of more knowledgeable members can provide some assistance.

I have taken some measurements.

The rear of the stamp clearly shows SE watermark.

Look forward to your comments.

At a first glance, the word "Scissors" springs to mind.
Always on the lookout for Australian pre decimal First Day Covers.

SG. states 1934 for the rare coil, the cancel is clearly 1938 which would be highly unlikely to be used so late,

The width of the stamp requires to be a minimum of 20.25mm or greater before being considered to be the rare coil.
My first impression is that the stamp has been doctored.

I would need to check but I don't think any copies are known dated later than 1936.

Thank you Eirnmania.
My initial thoughts are confirmed and it has gone into the bin.
While I have your attention can I avail of more of your undoubted knowledge of all things Irish?
These two FDCs have plate numbers on the selvage of each stamps.
Does this add value to the covers?

It might have added a little value had the Europa cover been more neatly addressed, The same applies to the Wolfe Tone cover, that is slightly more appealing to the eye. None the less an interesting pair of covers
Type addressed and illustrated FDC covers are always the way to go post 1950.

Thank you Eirnmania.
I agree with you regarding typed addresses and illustrated FDC.
I found these in a recent purchase and thought that they were interesting. I hope to trade them as I already have much better examples in my collection.

I know nothing about Ireland but as a US collector I’m familiar with fake coils. In US collecting rare coils are always considered fake without a cert or an extension for one.

That looks faked, the sides appear unevenly cut and if you look on the top right of the stamp… just above the 4th white dot on the right margin I believe I see the very tip of a perf hole.

Thanks for the reply Billw2
I think we all agree that it is not genuine.
The previous owner is deceased and I don't believe he thought it was genuine either.

Gotcha. Just mentioned the perf hole as you’ll see that a lot and didn’t see that anyone else mentioned it or if they did I missed it.
