SOS to any USA "AAA" Members - road maps needed ASAP please!

Post by Global Administrator »

If any USA members can assist here I'd really appreciate it.

We are driving from Dec 21 from Atlanta thru Georgie, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee.

We drive only on back roads, and paths less travelled, so the large fold out state maps, and those nice little Hotel and things to see type AAA books are really useful and I cannot get them here.

I have some from driving this region a few years back, but current ones will be far more useful.

If anyone can round these up, and mail to our Atlanta hotel I'd greatly appreciate it.

Please add a note here if you can help, or email ozstamps at gmail.com -- thanks!

Sorry Glen, I neither have a car nor drive.

An alternative might be to take a wi-fi'd laptop and use google map.

I collect Volcanos on stamps

I am a member but unfortunately no where near a AAA office to pick up maps. I took a quick look around the AAA website to see if they could be downloaded

GO to Driving Resources (top right) - Get maps - online map gallery - get maps link again and put in where you want.

Glen,

I would be interested in hearing what you think about Georgia when you get back. I don't have any maps to give you, I switched to the Germin GPS a while back. Mine even comes with an Australian Accent.

If you have time, swing up to Athens. It is only an hour east of Atlanta. Fun little city, but not sure what will be open during the holidays.

Glen, I have 4 maps not all up to date but if you are traveling back roads they should do. Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi. I haven't used a map in ages. I use a TOM TOM GPS. If these will help I will send them down to the hotel. Or you can stop by and pick them up :D I live between Atlanta and Athens. In the mean time, I will look around and see if I can find more and better ones. Will send them around the 15th of Dec to make sure you get them. You should be here in the spring.

I had a camera mailed priority mail and that too, they claim is not there.

Do you recall roughly the size and outer appearance of what they were packed in ... that helps if they get a rough outline? Glen

Yes; it was in a Priority Mail Tyvek envelope, 11.625" X 15.125", like this:

Image

Addressed to exactly as you communicated via email:

Hold for - GLEN STEPHENS
Guest of Hotel December 20
(name and address of hotel) (not sure if you want that posted or not)

It's 4 lbs, 3 ozs. It's got $11.00 in stamps, hand-cancelled, and the remainder postage in the usual post office sticker they add at the counter on the front.

I knew I should have taken a picture of it before I mailed it... anyway, I hope someone finds it stacked up somewhere in the back!

Post by Global Administrator »

Well we are well away now.

We got snowed in at Washington.

United cancelled our flight to Atlanta and could not get us on anything together for 3 days.

This was the snow from our hotel balcony - below.

Someone told us it was only 5 or 6 hours to drive to ATL, and our trusty Rand McNally was locked in the suitcase - mixed up with 10,000 other cases in IAD, so we could not access it, so we stupidly believed that.

So we rented a car for $US230 one way for 24 hours .. a lot better than the $US500 Avis wanted for a day. (Snow-outs and car rental prices are a bad mix. Alamo and Dollar had ZERO cars in DC to rent - at any price.)

We heard off and guess what .. the 'few hours' was more like TWELVE hours driving.

Margo collapsed in bed when we got there!

Popped by the Martin Luther King Memorial today . . very interesting. I was there 10 years back but much better now.

Then went to CNN Centre today --- who even have their own Post Office! See photo below.

We booked a long personal VIP Tour of the news operation with a private CNN Executive guide, and an armed security guard at all times. (Why he was needed .. who knows?)

Took us right into news rooms and totally on air control centres etc. Well worth the money. Margo even got to read news off auto cues!

Seeing many of the CNN newsreaders are now ozzies, she may have a new career path!

Up in Chattanooga Tennessee now.

Merry Christmas to you too Tassie.

Thanks so much Wastrel - I've been poring over the maps tonight working out the most scenic routes etc (In between my gigs on CNN  )

Sorry we missed out on catching up, Tooler. Hope there's an opportunity another time (or maybe in Sydney 8) ).

Lovely weather now that we're in the South- all fascinating , a new part of the world for me (but no more driving 12 hours straight- at least I stayed on the correct side of the road)

Cheers

They were much appreciated -- thanks. :D

As we do not stay on highways or interstates, they are a godsend.

We take total back roads if we can. You really see the real America that way.

And finding accommodation when the sun sets is usually a VERY tough ask in some of these remote places. So those detailed AAA books are a godsend, as they list things down to 1 Star Roach motels usually, were they exist

Those huge AA detailed maps of each State are brilliant. We often see some historic or man made or natural features marked on those maps, and then wander off to see it.

One time driving through North and South Dakota I saw a note on them re the world's tallest man made structure. I bet not a single person reading this has a clue what it was, (unless they google it) or has ever seen it, but those maps worked for me then. :D

The equipment in that place would make your techies head spin Roly!

The CNN Espanol studio has several remote control $400,000 cameras they operate from Latin America etc.

We watched the anchor doing USA CNN live news, with 3 cameras on him, they called Hughy, Dewie and Louie. All totally remote control, and cost over $US1 million.

Weird in a place with 100s of working staff all around him, to see something going live with no human touching the cameras!

They are converting the entire place to Mac from PC very soon.

I'd guess there are 1000s of computers in that place (some rooms had 100s in each) so a nice commission for some salesman!

World's tallest man-made structure?

Sure, that's an easy one being a NATIVE from the high plains of North Dakota - a TV mast or antenna.

I think there are a couple of other intersting facts about ND:

1. 4th biggest oil producer in the USA now - probably going to keep that rank or maybe even go up in the next couple of years.

2. Currently has the lowest unemployment rate for states in the USA

3. Has a state run bank - the Bank of North Dakota and one that makes a profit.

4. The geographical center of North America is near Rugby, North Dakota.

5. Usually the safest state in the USA

6. Has the highest % of students finishing high school in the USA (84%). 90% of the population has finished high school.

7. The highest temp ever recorded in ND was 121 F. The lowest was -60 F . Both recorded in 1936. The coldest I ever remember was about -40F (Same as -40 C). The average low in January is -19 C.

What is the world's tallest manmade structure?

The KVLY TV Tower is the world's tallest manmade structure. The antenna is located near Fargo, North Dakota, USA. It is 2,063 feet tall.

Hi Glen and Margo. Glen looks like you are on the way to another career. Just 12 miles or so south of you is Tunica, Mississippi.

I have spent a few weekends their trying to make my fortune at the casinos. :( If you keep going south from Tunica, you will come to the Robert Johnson Monument. Robert Johnson wanted to play the blues so bad that he sold his soul to the Devil, so the story goes.

Something caused that unknown guitarist to emerge from a Mississippi cotton plantation as the greatest bluesman of his day. The diabolical deal took place at the stroke of midnight out side Dockery Plantation, at the crossroads of Highway 61 and Highway 49, and today that spot is marked by a monument of a massive sky-blue guitars.
I buy too much, can't sell enough - but the information here is priceless.

I stayed at Tunica many years ago - the first week those Casinos opened. They were in cotton fields. It was a joke! There were about 6 (non staff) people in the entire Sheraton Casino for hours.

Last time I visited they were far more well established!

Brummie,

Cat Wrangling (or "Cat Herding") is a term for trying to manage or control a large number of strong-willed individuals (think cats, stamp collectors, Australians...) into following a set of parameters and not going off and "doing their own thing".

I think the example quoted related to the Secret Santa thread which needs a firm hand to keep things under control (but I'm sure it applies similarly to numerous other threads such as Norm's Footie threads etc).

Some years ago EDS ran a TV advert featuring "Cat Herding", the point of which was to show how they could manage large and difficult IT projects. Probably on You Tube somewhere :!:

Thanks Gavin. I presumed it must have been something difficult by the other words in the sentence but I have never heard those words before and thought it may have been an American saying :?

The diabolical deal took place at the stroke of midnight out side Dockery Plantation, at the crossroads of Highway 61 and Highway 49, and today that spot is marked by a monument of a massive sky-blue guitars.
