Great Britain 1988 Christmas set on Royal Mail first day cover, apparently unaddressed although the image may have been doctored.

Ordinary non-pictorial Paddington W 1 First Day of Issue postmarks

I guessed "over 100", one never knows with some people ($3000 for the headless 'Roo...).

Was there a rate increase or something that created an 'unissued' value that is on the cover?

I know nothing about British stamps, so I'm guessing that the left stamp is the wrong value, and only a handful got through the checking system.

Oh well I should have invoked The Sherriff's usual rules - I would have expected everybody to keep quite as far as clues are concerned

Can't find his badge - never mind, this should put you all off!

MODERATOR COMMENT:

I won't say how I've voted...

I think it's fair enough that the error is identified in the discussion , but PLEASE nobody disclose the known value of the cover until Norvic wants to confirm it.

Ian - might be worth stating how long you want the poll / discussion to go on before the "reveal"

I think I set it as a 1-day after getting my fingers burnt on the one I set for 7 days, only to have several people blabbing very quickly.

Damn! Just realise that it is shown above and I set it for 3 days. Ho hum.

This cover was sold by Warwick & Warwick on 1 September 2010 for £2400 - £2760 with buyer's premium.

As has been pointed out the lowest value is 13p - SG1414a priced mint at £9500. After a supply of 13p stamps was printed the rate was increased to 14p. But some 13p values were already in the Post Office Year Books (so a good one to check among all those worthless YBs!)

As reported, this find suggests that there was another source, as it is unlikely that anybody would remove a set from the year book to put on a first day cover when the stamps were readily available at the same time. Although Gibbons' footnote only refers to the year book finds, the Philatelic Bulletin reports that 10 have been found mint, one used, and three on FDCs. Maybe more will turn up used from (worthless) year books in years to come!

Hello Norvic

I have just sent an email to a long time friend of mine (English) who moved to Canada quite a few years ago - a bit in the doldrums that his GB collection from 1980's is not going to pay for his retirement. (He sent me swags of GB stamps and I returned the favour from here)

I hope he finds a 13p stamp. It would cheer him up no end!

I really love unissued stamps!

If I ever win the lottery, one of the first new collections I'd start would be just this.

I find the story of why they didn't get issued fascinating.

I'd start with the very first unissued stamp - the GB 1d black VR - and go right through.

Has such a collection been done??
