Opening round of the 2013/14 Saturday Pennant season in lawn bowls today. I am playing at home this week (as skip), so we should have a win to start the season off (here's hoping anyway!).

I had a large Bush Turkey somehow got into the house this weekend, and he could not get out, as the glass windows are not doors.

He panicked and pooped a lot (over some stamps - thank you TURKEY!), as he felt trapped, and finally got out to the pool and then had to work out how to get down the 10 metres to the driveway!

I ate about a quarter of a turkey yesterday, (our Canadian Thanksgiving).

He looks a decent size, and I notice you sell the odd lot of stamps for a dinner out. I think you missed a real meal opportunity.

Some roast potatoes, veg, and some stuffing......I suppose those claws might have given you some trouble.

Yes these Bush Turkeys nearly became extinct as they were eaten. They are pretty unafraid of humans so would be easy to catch. Pretty decent size, so a fair bit of meat on them I am guessing.

We have quite a few around the home, and you can walk to a few metres and they are fearless.

Now they are protected here, so are breeding up.

That is one mean (and ugly) looking bird.... good sense of balance though! :)

No bush turkeys here but I have had to secure the green bin lid with a bungee cord to discourage the raccoons from throwing parties around the house.

Racoons look so adorable to us in Australia (where we don't have any) but I'm told they can be quite aggressive.

Same with squirrels- my first time in Washington I stood and watched some in a park for about 30 minutes much to the amusement of the locals

Probably similar to the way tourists watch destructive bloody brush tailed possums here! Most of Melbourne's parks (in the inner city anyway) have metal collars around the trunks of older trees.

This is an attempt to keep the possums from climbing them and destroying them. From a distance, they look very cute, horrible little things! :D

Winter has arrived here in Busan

Had to wear a jacket to work for the first time since March. Season changes always amaze me here. You go to bed, it's autumn, you wake up, temp has dropped 10-15°c and winter is here!
Same in spring/summer, you go to work it's a beautiful 25°c, come back at night and it's 35° and 90% humidity.

Shouldn't complain though as we've missed all the typhoons so far. We only had some heavy rain on Saturday night.

Time to look out the Christmas jumpers again
It's good to shoot the breeze with like-minded people.

We had a different Xmas Lunch than most members here.

We are in the back-blocks up near Lake Volta Ghana, East Africa - the largest man-made lake on earth. The Volta River is nearby, and the only place we could find for lunch on Xmas Day, a few hours back, served this stuff in pix below.

River caught fish that morning by the young guys in wooden long boats, and sold by women stacking them on their heads.

All then grilled, with a bowl of red hot Chilli to go on it.

And a baseball size glob of hot, dense white stodge, of unknown content that arrived in plastic for some reason. That appeared to be same consistency and taste as PolyFilla for walls etc, but what do we know?

And that was IT.

No knives or forks as you can see were offered.

Waitress bought out a huge plastic bowl each, with hot water it it, and thick cotton napkins, and a plastic dispenser of "Everyday Fresh" green dishwashing liquid.

We were ordered to wash our hands, as the fish and the stodge needed to be eaten with fingers.

And so it was - DARN hard, as there were tons of bones.

They were aghast as we left so much 'food' on our plates, especially the fish head and eyes, which are a delicacy there it appears.

Merry Xmas to all around the globe, and like us, who have only just had Xmas Dinner!

Evening all,
Just checking in. Only just rumbled this thread.
Spent a LARGE portion of yesterday, preparing for a stall at the local monthly markets.
Awoke this morning, Saturday, at sparrow fRt, actually even earlier, to light rain and apache [ strike out of nowhere and disappear before steps can be mounted] showers. The roosters weren't crowing but the farmers were smiling [ sounds like frowns cracking]
Pointless setting up outdoors in this area, no one owns a raincoat or umbrella.
Second month in a row. Last market before xmas.
Went to check progress at the markets at 9am. 7 stalls [ usually up to 90], 20 stallholders, still raining, no lookers. Usually at least 900 lookers trying not to be customers.
Rained on and off until 3pm when the markets officially close.
Should have done what the old people use to do, have a cigarette, a Bex, a cup of tea and had a lie down. :)
So had the cheapest bit of that formula. Arose[ well just got, really], mucked about[ dealt thoughtfully] with some stamps and then hit SB .
Hope your day was more productive financially,

cheers, hycgan the grumbler

I've lost track of how many regions to which we're now sending blades of grass  It's nice to know that, at least, one region got some water :!:

Here, in deepest darkest Victoria, the detour sig(h)ns are still out. We see the rain clouds to the north - we see the rain clouds to the south - we see b*gger all moisture on the ground around us

JohnHart, well done, quite correct. an old teacher's [40ish is old to a 7 year old] trick question except you would receive a frown and warning for using "get, got or gotten".
Bex and Vincents were powdered preparations [sold in boxes of 12 or more] composed of a cocktail of analgesics [ particularly aspirin ], stomach calmatives [spellcheck does not recognize a plural adjective/adverb raised to noun status] [probably bicarbonate of soda] and whose guess what other fillers and claimed to calm the nerves while relieving all known and yet to be discovered ailments that can affect mankind[particularly market-focused on the bored, anxious, dyspeptic and insecure hypochondriac. Popular in working class areas and purchased at supermarkets, cornerstores, newsagents, bars etc [anywhere] :!: It may be an urban myth, but like coca cola, it was rumored [1940s era] that B.&/or V.had once "when first on the market, before the laws changed....." contained the dreaded sth americon [ deliberately miss pelt for legal reasons    ] pale powder. Lost market eminence in late 1960s-early 70s [bad press :- youth mixing B&V with coca cola often at school] and disappeared from popular view by 1990s in Australie [ deliberately miss pelt ...etc]  .
The skinny:- B&V were '' proprietary preparations produced to poison people for profit particularly the poor housewives''
Also there were some duty of care legal challenges that may have contributed
to their market disappearance.
cheers

mcgooley,
What's the latest figures? 10% of qld shires and 85% of qld's area is drought declared. but warwick [sthn downs shire] has not been so declared this round of droughts. it's from where some of those"blades of grass" are being so expensively sent. Been shopping for red meat lately? have to remortgage to retain the carnivore role of an omnivore.
re: climate change, now that's redundancy in itself. "climate" means "change" not "stasis". all the oldies ever talked to about climate variation always speak of their grandparents speaking of their grandparents speaking about how much the weather [read climate] had changed since they were children.[yes a long time ago]
the p. f. of Kirabati need to discover oil on their territory. they'd be paid to live comfortably in Monaco by the oil companies. no more p.f.,no more probs. simple, elegant. gore and kerry and whoever else looking for the next high paid, high profile job. no more climate summit banquets etc etc.
sorry about the hobby horse/ soapbox rant. 8)

Already 39.4C in beautiful downtown Lara. Expected to get to 42C but probably higher later today. I am not liking this at all (I am not good with heat), and if I could afford it, I would move to Tassie tomorrow.

I am beginning to wonder how many people in Adelaide can even survive, given the recent near week long over 40C temperatures have persisted.

Besides it may have shredded the stamps, or worse, in transit.

Glen, you need to learn some internet etiquette.

1. Once you have kittened a thread on a BB, it can never be the same again.

2. See one.

3. See one and two.

We are in the back-blocks up near Lake Volta Ghana, East Africa - the largest man-made lake on earth. The Volta River is nearby, and the only place we could find for lunch on Xmas Day, a few hours back, served this stuff in pix below.

And a baseball size glob of hot, dense white stodge, of unknown content that arrived in plastic for some reason. That appeared to be same consistency and taste as PolyFilla for walls etc, but what do we know?

The white glob is an African delicacy known as fufu, it is made from grounded up and cooked cassava paste and usually pounded in the giant wooden pestles you see in those pictures of African women with mallets pounding.

Fufu like taro is very high in starch and easy to prepare and thus a staple of the West African diet. It has to be boiled through like Taro to remove the toxins that can not make it poisonous. Fufu is also popular in Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, Benin, Togo and Cameroon.

Evening all. My told oldest son in law is from Ghana. He loves his sardine stew. First time Nina made it for us me and Niki looked at each other and thought "What the hell is this?" But it was good and you are making me hungry for some.

Anyway Friday here in Adelaide, a chance to get some 8 ball practice. Currently second in the running for leagues top player (my teams captain is top and keeps giving himself easier games to stay there).

Did someone mention SARDINES????

We were recently in Portugal for NYE and the national dish there is of course SARDINES. There is one day a year there - St. Anthony's Day June 12, where near every house places an small BBQ outside, and grills SARDINES - must be amazing.

We went to a little place called Sintra, and guess what I just had to order -

Thy are HUGE there as you can see.

DAMN hard to eat with a knife and fork with those fine bones. Mentioned this to a local the next day who laughed, and said even in the finest restaurants is it normal and perfectly OK to pick them up with your fingers and eat and suck the meat off the bone!

Greetings from a picturesque North Yorkshire, where it appears even my chief hinge licker has been able to claim a snow day.

It’s 2:12 in the morning here on the day after Christmas (Boxing Day in much of the world, but not here) and I couldn’t sleep so I thought I’d check out Stampboards. It’s 28 degrees F (-2 C) outside which is about normal for us at this time of the year in Southeastern Kentucky.

So, how was everyone’s Christmas? We actually had our Christmas on Saturday due to our children needing to see both us and their in-laws. Marcie and her husband Rosario drove in from their home in Nashville, Tennessee and Michael and his fiancée Nicole drove in from their home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Both cities are about 3 hours driving time away. After spending Saturday night with their mother and I, they all left on Sunday for the drive home so they could catch flights on Monday. Michael and Nicole had to fly to Detroit, Michigan to see her parents and Marcie and Rosario had to fly all the way to Italy to see his. All arrived safely. Marcie promised to bring me back as many stamps as she could lay her hands on.

We had a good Christmas up until the time Marcie burned her hand on the wood stove in our family room. I was unaware that my daughter even knew such language.:D Rhubarb, my Miniature Pinscher, ran under her feet, causing her to loose her balance and she grabbed the red-hot wood stove to keep from falling. It was a pretty bad burn but we could not get her to go to the hospital as she has too much of her father in her. Hopefully it will heal correctly and not cause her any undue problems.

Did anyone get anything related to stamp collecting for Christmas? Marcie and Rosario got me a set of the 2019 Scott catalogs, a Unitrade specialized catalog of Canada, and two Lindner stock books. I was very grateful as my set of Scott catalogs are from 2006 (I recently began collecting again after a 10 year lapse). Upon seeing what Marcie got me, Michael looked at me and said, “You collect stamps?” He has always been in a world of his own!

Well, my eyelids are getting heavy and I think that I can sleep now. I hope that everyone who is traveling or who have family/friends who are traveling this Holiday Season can all return home safe and sound. May everyone have a safe, happy, and healthy New Year and may you all achieve some of your collecting goals in the year to come. God bless you all!
