Nice exhibition. About a hundred dealers all told (including the ones operating out of briefcases). Not much for revenue, princely states. good sets of Gandhi, and topicals. Very good offerings for M/Sheets.Coins & Currency Notes-- prices have shot up in recent years.

Met a fellow Stampboarder who now represents Hawid & Prinz. He had a nice display.

Went with my wife. Could not buy much. :D

Philately Day – Stamps of India – Miniature Sheet – Philately Day – By India Post
Today is Philately Day, celebrated all over the country during one week celebration of National Postal Week from 9 – 15 October. 12th October is being celebrated as Philately Day in all Post Offices of the country. On this day stamp exhibitions and workshops are organized.
Philately is termed as collection and study of postage stamps. It is an extremely popular hobby and has millions of collectors worldwide. The first postage stamp, the Penny Black was issued by Britain in 1840 picturing young Queen Victoria. It was produced without perforations and consequently had to be cut from the sheet with scissors in order to be used. Postage stamp collecting began at the same time that stamps were first issued and by 1860 thousands of collectors and stamp dealers were appearing around the world as this new study and hobby spread across Europe, European colonies, the United States and other parts of the World. At present, it is estimated that about 25 million people enjoy this hobby in the United States; while worldwide the estimated numbers of stamp collectors is around 200 million. There are numerous philatelic clubs and societies who are promoting philately as a hobby. Over the years, postage stamp has assumed additional dimensions, it is a mode of commemorating, celebrating and promoting national heritage and events; it plays a significant role as an ambassador, a brand image of postal administration and a statement of sovereignty of a nation.
Philately is a delightful hobby that sharpens and satisfies your aesthetic tastes. While expanding your knowledge of and interaction with the world you live in, you get to know interesting details of politics, history , prominent personalities, national and international events, geography, flora and fauna, agriculture, science, monuments, soldiers, warriors, scientists, arms and ammunition, modes of transport etc. This process of learning becomes more delightful through visuals and brief write-ups. In addition, philately cultivates a meticulous and focused attention to detail. It also helps you to make friends across boundaries and age limits.

Hi Mani and kbdessai

Please excuse my ignorance if this is a really stupid question

But could I ask why some of the issues -- like the Scinde Horse -- have a black line across the value while other issues don't?

Regards, mako

Hi
Those black lines are drawn on such ''specimen" images, to make sure that these images cannot be used as postage stamps.. (I wonder who would do it though!)

It depends from website to website, as these images are taken from various websites/emails from friends. So, these lines are the ones used to cancel the values. Such lines can also be found on spcimen currency notes.

Ram Gopal Maheshwari

Freedom fighter, journo, a social worker and a person who left no stone unturned for the cause of Hindi language, Ramgopal Maheshwari was fondly remembered during his birth centenary year November 20, 2011 to November 20, 2012.

Mahatma Gandhiji's Sevagram Ashram inspired him to be a Gandhian. He involved himself in the freedom movement. He was known as 'Babuji’, wore khadi and believed in simple living. dedicatedly carried out editing and publishing of the mouthpiece of the Maheshwari community. This was the beginning of his journalistic life and it continued till the end of his life.

Alongwith publication of ‘Maheshwari’, Babuji also took the responsibility of the biweekly publication ‘Nava Rajasthan’ started by Brijlal Biyani at Akola. Babuji started a biweekly paper ‘Nava Bharat’ from Nagpur which soon became a daily publication.

Image

Babuji made "Nava Bharat" newspaper a medium for the nation’s freedom movement, which is symolised in the tricolour being held by a satyagrahi on the newspaper’s masthead.

I have a small question.
Is there a PO selling price difference between sets and s/s?

My local dealer has the Olympic issue now. The set is €1,90 (Rp135) and the s/s is €4,30 (Rp305).
So that's a big difference.

These set-s/s price differences come with all Indian new issues.

Officially no. The Olympic issue has 4 stamps. 2 x 20, 2 x 5 = INR 50. Cost of the set and cost of the s/s.

If you are comparing to whole sheets, that is a different issue alltogether. There are 5 sheets. One each for the stamps. And one mixed sheet of all issues.

Thanks for the kind offer Kbdessai.

But sorry, I am not interested in this sheet. I was just wondering why there are price differences.

I bought some s/s the last 10 years and I realize now that I paid too much for them. They were all twice or triple the price of a set.

India Post released a commemorative stamp on the holy saint Sri Shivarathri Shivayogi. The stamp issued on 21 December 2012 of denomination Rupees Five. Sri Shivarathri Shivayogi was a great saint of the 10th Century A.D. He came into limelight with his efforts to restore peace between two warring kings: Rachamalla IV of the Gangas of Talakkadu and Rajajraja Chola I of the Chola dynasty.

Image

Both the monarchs volunteered to set up a "Math" or "Peetham" for the saint to commemorate this occasion. The math (holy shrine) was thus established on the banks of the river Kapila, near Suttur in present day Mysore district. The "Math" continues to serve people even today irrespective of class, colour, gender and other differences.
