Only problem I seem to be having is with this thread of Glens.

Everything else seems to be working fine.

I had a problem earlier today loading pictures. I succeeded after a lot of error messages, and have not tried since.

I was browsing the board last night, and all the avatars had vanished, which was odd.

There weren't blank boxes with the dreaded red X, just a space.

Very odd.

I couldn't log in last night so had to pretend I had forgotten my password, get an email and then 'reset' the password to exactly what it already was. The first time I have ever had to do that anywhere.

I don't know if it is a function of my new Firefox update, but I don't get the dreaded RED X anymore for missing images.......just a little red dot?

The "NEW" version PHOTOBUCKET : Questions and Answers

Post by mcgooley »

The staff at Photobucket Support would like to have a thread dedicated to questions, comments, and (reasonable!) criticisms of the website.....remember, no good comes from shooting the messenger

Most of the support staff simply don't have the time to search through the hundreds (thousands!!!!!) of different threads on stampboards looking for people who have issues with photobucket.

To that end, this thread is for them, and all the members here, to hold the conversation; and to get the ball rolling, I will list some of the threads which have been started over the past year or so on issues our members have had.

Photobucket - I just can't do it!

Is there an alternative to photobucket, for images here?

"Your Image Is Too Big" Photobucket problems- what can I do?

Photobucket login problems

October 7 2012 - Anyone having problems with Photobucket?

Photobucket upgrade?

Photobucket changing the name of the file I upload

How to upload photobucket images from an iphone?

Problem with Photobucket

Are you having any issues with Photobucket?

Editing old posts in photobucket

If we can keep all the queries &c. in one place, this should make for smoother and faster communications.

I for one am very happy that Derek and the others are prepared to make the time and effort available for members here. Thank you one and all.

I'll start the ball rolling with the biggy that bugs us the most...

Please bring back the automatic resizing of images in the options. The original PB had this. Being able to load any large image and have it resized down to 800*600 was an excellent and well used feature.

I' don't really want to take 10 steps more every time for each image I upload.

I think the one of the biggest issues is the speed or the lack thereof. I know there are many reasons but sometimes on the same computer it is fast & other times slow.

I realise that this is a free site & therefore there has to be advertising but I think that is one of the reasons it is slow. I don't really mind the advertising, but I don't know how many times I have been the 999,999 visitor to the site, offering me a "Woolsworth Voucher" rather than a "Woolworths Voucher". So can the form of advertising be altered so it doesn't slow down the site?

I'm happy with photobucket at the moment. :D

When I was stuck on the new "beta" version and couldn't opt out I was having loads of problems.

Now that I'm back on to the OLD version I am having no problems whatsoever.

Allanswood makes a good point about the BETA version. When you edit a picture, you are wasting your time as the edit you make never saves. You can edit the size, crop it, whatever .. Then save it and try to upload on here and all that shows is the original. That was a PAIN!

Glad to be back using the old version!!!

Yes, this. Outside of this issue, I find the Beta Photobucket as easy to navigate as ever, and have no other issues with it.

I also need to add, that a few years ago now, I had serious problems with my (then free) account, and that the Photobucket help desk was the best on-line help service I have ever had anywhere at any time. It took three days to fix my problems, but that was largely due to time zone differences and, of course, me. The staff were amazingly good and helpful, with prompt responses and knew of what they spake.

Photobucket BETA version seems to be missing the option of uploading pictures from a URL? A handy tool, and I often use it.

Thanks mcgooley for setting this up.
I have reposted this here from "Photobuckets - I just can't do it"

HELP

Early last week I wanted to get into photobucket, I tried signing in but it would not accept my password, so I requested a new one.
A few hours later I received an email from photobucket.

We have received a password reset request for the "my name here" Photobucket account. If you requested a password reset for this account, please click below.

so far so good.

then there are two lines in blue
https://secure-beta.photobucket.com/user/resetpassword?
userid=(8numbers here)&token=(40numbers and letters here)

Now this part has my correct name "my name here" but this part is not my correct user name "userid=(8numbers here)&token"
(On past resets my correct user name used to be here)
In the past when I have requested a password reset I used to copy it and paste it into the ULR (I think that's the right term) and everything was OK.

Now when I click on the blue part on the email it takes me a photobucket page, it has a few pictures and the only place I can find where I may be able to do a reset is the "Sign In" button,
when I click there and enter my old correct user name and enter my old (or a new password name as I have tried lots of times) it won't accept it, I've tried so often that it has locked me out and told me to try again later.

On the photobucket email there is in blue a "help" button when I click there it takes me to the same page as when I click on the reset part.

On there I typed in "help" in the search box and all I got was some small pictures, 99 pages of them.

So I've requested 3 resets from photobucket and only had the first reply, I can't send them a request for HELP to ask them what I should do.

So I am hoping someone here can guide me step by step (because I'm a DUMMY on computers) on how to overcome this issue.

I would like to get back to the old system and not the beta, but beta is better than not being able to get in at all.

Best regards David

mcgooley has since given me a link to their HELP page and I am awaiting their reply email sent 20/1/13.

Best regards David :(

I still would like two questions answered (and fixed), that I, as well as member GUTTERS, have raised, in addition to the automatic resizing issue that has already been mentioned here:

- Why the thumbnail view of albums only shows half of every picture. This is annoying in the new version, and a big reason for me to prefer the old version where you could see the entire picture.

- In the old version you can hover over the picture and then click on the IMG line to copy it automatically and then just paste it on your post in Stampboards. This does not seem to be possible in the new version.

Cheers,

Joel.

PS: thank you Mcgooley for this initiative. A very good idea indeed! :D

I received 2 emails for a reset today from photobucket.

I think Jonathan from photobucket saw my problem here and help to correct it.

THANK YOU

I have been able to reset it to the old system, and uploaded a scan, so it seems to be working OK.

The new reset is different to the first one (now all on one line) so maybe something got crossed up in the first reset.

Best regards David

The "Your Image Is Too Big" Photobucket problems- what can I do? issue still seems to be giving some members here some grief.

Could one of the Photobucket team please have a look at the thread, and be able to give some advice?

Great question! We are debating which direction to take with this feature. You WILL have an easy option to resize images, it will either be the same as before -where you select a size and your images are adjusted upon upload- OR it will be a linking option where you can easily set the size of your image prior to linking.

Either way it will be very easy. I hope this helps!

Thanks Brad, I have a couple questions.

Do you notice a specific ad on the page slowing down your performance? For example, is the page slow when you scroll? Does this slow performance happen every day, do you notice specific times when it is occurring?

Thanks

A: You can get rid of the thumbnail frame by tuning on easy linking options, -which addresses your second question as well-. I linked an article below that walks you through turning this feature on. The one click copy is not on the site, just highlight and copy the link. Super quick, no annoying thumbnail frames!

This is a weird one. When you resize the images are you choosing "save and replace" or are you saving as a new image? If you are choosing save and replace, this error may be occurring because the link to the image is not updating as quickly as the image in Photobucket. Try saving the resized image as a new file and see if you have the same problem.

If you do, I would like to reach out to StampBoards to get more detail on how this error is occurring.

Hello,

I tried "drag and drop" to shift images between albums but it does not work. Using the "move" option on each image is time consuming. Am I missing something?

Thanks

This is most likely a Javascript issue. I've provided a link below to a site that will let you know if Javascript is enabled for your browser, and if it is not enabled, it will go over the steps for your browser to enable it.

http://enable-javascript.com/

Let me know if this doesn't do the trick.

Thanks for the quick answer.

Sorry, no luck. I used your link and java is enabled.

When I pull up my main album, the sub-albums are shown reduced size on the right. When I try to drag an image from the main album to a sub album, I get the circle with a slash through it.

Ok I have just gone in now & the OZ lotto ad is playing.

I asked to upload & after waiting several minutes, I went & made a cup of coffee & when I came back upload screen still had not opened. Cancelled request & started again & it was almost immediate. I uploaded several more & again after waiting a minute on a couple of times, I cancelled out & then requested again & it worked fine.

When I scroll through my library I do find it slow & it does not appear to be happening at a specific time (it is most of the time).

Further to my email above I have just done some more uploading. I find if the upload starts before the ad starts then it is quick. If the ad kicks in before the upload then it is slow (& it is still the Oz Lotto ad).

Ahoj Photobucket!

I recently bought a new computer and installed the old version of Photobucket as I did not like the newer version.

It worked fine for several weeks and then one day I found that the stored images became frames with the red cross at the top left. Even right-clicking on 'open picture' did not help.

I uploaded new photos which appeared within photobucket with the red cross, but clicking on the links and copying them to Stampboards the full picture appeared.

I did not consciously alter my settings and on my laptop photobucket is still working normally with pictures at all times.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you,

Honza

Hi Brad

Thanks for all of the assistance you have provided to members here re Photobucket.

3 questions from me:

Now only 27 days to the changeover to the new site

Image

Will it still be possible to use the old version after the new site goes live?

Will the new site have resizing editing available and let you set defaults re size of images to upload?

Also I've noticed my files now have long names and randomised extensions on the end eg
These three images were loaded consecutively but the file names don't obviously indicate that- the sequence is buried in the file name.

https://www.stampboards.com/images/Margoz_2007/12SB/2_zpsa1b1f9a5.jpg
https://www.stampboards.com/images/Margoz_2007/12SB/3_zpsb98621f4.jpg
https://www.stampboards.com/images/Margoz_2007/12SB/4_zps1fe71d95.jpg

Here how they used to look (some loaded last month):

https://www.stampboards.com/images/Margoz_2007/12SB/4.jpg
https://www.stampboards.com/images/Margoz_2007/12SB/3.jpg
https://www.stampboards.com/images/Margoz_2007/12SB/2.jpg

Is there any way of getting back to the much shorter, and clearly sequential file names?

Many thanks

Margo

I'm so glad you just asked that! I logged in before and got the same warning message and was wondering what happens after that point as I'm already having problems with pixel sizes despite using the old version and having the default settings correct.

What I find worrying about the whole change is that some features that we use (Upload Size options) were dropped from the new version beta, but are going to be added back in. But no date has yet been set for that.

Now they seem to be tempting us with 'bonus storage' to move over and be happy about it, even though key features are still on the 'to do' list. I can see a lot less activity while we wait for the Current List of Missing Features to be finished.

Photobucket cutting over to their new version on March 1?

Post by joelk »

I'm seeing a message implying that they are cutting over to the new version on March 1.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this means there will no longer be any option to go back to the 'old' version that most of us prefer.

Does anyone have more information about that?

Cheers,
Joel.

Yes I hope they allow those of us who wish, to choose to keep using the old and familiar and functional version.

I pay for the PRO version each year, as I hate ads on websites, and object to being forced to use a "new" version that clearly has a lot of bugs, and less functionality over the one I now pay for.

ebay is a huge success as the core website interface has not changed for 15 years.

If someone had not visited ebay since 1998 - or even earlier (my usage has only been since 1998) they could bid and navigate readily, as it is all the same to the user.

Fees have increased (a LOT!), rules have been altered, but to the user it is unchanged. You place a bid now the same way as 15 years back.

I get the feeling a feeling lot of the young tech guys that work for places like photobucket were not even BORN when ebay started.

CHANGING something that works perfectly well for clients is dumb, and successful companies avoid doing it.

You are right Glen. I will merge this with the Q&A topic started by Mcgooley.

Cheers,
Joel.

PS: And BTW, I also pay for the PRO version and do not wish to cut over to the new version.

I'm so glad you just asked that! I logged in before and got the same warning message and was wondering what happens after that point as I'm already having problems with pixel sizes despite using the old version and having the default settings correct.

Jon
Since we are completing the feature set on the new site, we will no longer provide the original Photobucket website. One of the reasons we have had some minor transition errors is because we have been working to maintain two sites. Consolidating our focus on one site will allow us to make updates and improvements more quickly.

I understand this line of thought and have read many 'if it aint broke' type feedback emails. We did extensive market research prior to making this change, and our data analytics show that an update was the correct decision. Of course, there are always some growing pains, and not all users feel the same about the changes. Our goal is to build an updated website and maintain performance and function that core users expect.

"I get the feeling a feeling lot of the young tech guys that work for places like photobucket were not even BORN when ebay started." This is not the case. :) Our team of engineers are all industry veterans. You can get to know them by following Photobucket on Linkedin.

...object to being forced to use a "new" version that clearly has a lot of bugs, and less functionality over the one I now pay for. We are rapidly filling in any missing features on the site. We have also been bug bashing for the past few months. Of course new bugs pop up, but this is part of running a website. I think you will be happy to see how vastly the new site has been improved over the last few months.

This is true! We are completing the new site and turning off the original Photobucket. We are updating the feature set, there should not be any major missing features when the switch over occurs. If you have questions about specific features, please let me know.

We are also open to any ideas that make the switching process easier. Would video tutorials help?

I asked Photobucket on twitter:
norvic wrote:You've announced '27 days until the switch' with a long list of 'Current List of Missing Features'. Won't be finished, will it?
And the reply was:
photobucket wrote: :) I think you will be pleasantly surprised. We have prioritized the top features for completion and our developers are on it!
A simple yes or no would have been better. :?

Can you confirm that if I switch to the new version today that the option to set a default image size will be available?

Thanks

Well I can answer that one: NO
See advice on the PB website:

Image

Basically we are being told to go away and resize somewhere else then upload to PB.

Many members here have paid for access to PB Pro version. The ability to preset a maximum image size is very basic functionality and it is very galling to pay for a service and to then be told you will have to use other software to prepare images or to go into each image and reset the size. I often load a hundred or more a day so this will seriously reduce my productivity.

I am trying to put together a tutorial for the new version to replace the old tutorial on the thread Want to add a photo/image? Practice posting a picture HERE!https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=284

The new one is going to be MUCH longer than the original sadly.
Here is the tutorial for the original version of PB:

Tutorial -- how to *EASILY* post ANY kind of images here!

If you have a scanned image on your computer or you want to post an image from the internet you can load them to Stampboards, via a free image storage program called Photobucket.

To set up a totally free account with Photobucket: Go to https://photobucket.com/

Each time you log in you will land on the upload page. The first time you use Photobucket set up a maximum image size compatible with Stampboards:

The 800 x 600 is the size we want ALL members to set as default: IGNORE their "recommended" size -
Image
Do NOT use their largest 1024 x 768 "Recommended" size, as that is TOO large for our page, and our software now "chokes" them, and refuses to load them up. Tick the 800 x 600 option shown below. (Most important) The other sizes including Message board are too small.
Image[/centre

In the upload screen there are options for uploading from your computer or from the Internet:

Image

When the image is loaded you have a number of options - make sure you use the IMG code option

Image

The image is now in a format ready to load onto Stampboards. All you need to do is
copy and paste the IMG code link and paste it into your Stampboards post box:

Image

Hit the PREVIEW Button, and that shows you all is correct with your image and your post. If it is not, you can play around with it BEFORE hitting 'SUBMIT' after which, all members can see your post.

When all looks correct, hit Submit and your image will appear in the post.

Please note - NEVER delete any images from your Photobucket account that you have once loaded here, or they will also be deleted from Stampboards - as look like this below!

What would really help is if you supported the old version until you actually completely fixed the new one.

What is amazing to me (but not unfamiliar) is that all we are discussing here are the features and benefits of the old system we are losing or not losing, but not how this new version is really better than the old one. It really doesn't seem to be an improvement at all.

We should bear in mind, of course, that some people use Photobucket in a different way to the way most of us use it, and have full captioning, all their holiday or other photos, and arrange albums, share access, and arrange printing.

I hope Photobucket implement the existing features that we use most, in the new version in the next 26 days. But the fact remains that, like eBay, stamp collectors are only a small part of (in this case) their mainly non-paying customer base.

That is of course correct Ian, but you don't know how many of the other users are also not happy with the new version, and it seems to me that the proportion of us who are actually paying customers is higher than the general population.

Joel.

More than likely. I just thought I would acknowledge that we are only part of Photobucket's customer base - who knows what dialogue they have with others?

Re: PHOTOBUCKET : Questions and Answers

I don't know the answer to that question, but I'm not sure about the economics of their choices:

- What is the evidence that the new version will give them a pick up in revenue: from advertising, number of users (which is related to the advertising revenue), number of paying users, etc... and what is that in relation to the cost of developing and maintaining the new version.

In that calculation, you also need to include the issue of depreciation of the development of the old version (likely fully depreciated by now), and the financial hit from the new version. Can't be good for the P&L unless there is a serious pick up in revenue.

Cheers,
Joel.

PS: A bit late for that discussion now though, since the development of the new version is largely a sunk cost.
