Gordon,

Great study lot apparently. Possibly hundreds of the same covers with just a few different types.

Be interesting to hear from whomever ends up buying them as to the exact contents.
Hi all,

Anyone here buy this lot at all? Please, let us know what was in it.
No, I didn't buy that lot, but I did buy the seemingly cloned lot in the inaugural Abacus stamp auction:

http://www.prestigephilately.com/catlot.php?acode=600679&auctionnum=227&sortcode=austph&lim=

I didn't look at the lot; I was attempting to be disciplined (I had booked only 35kgs for my return flight to Cairns).

However, Gary Watson hypnotised me during the auction, and I finished up with approx 100kgs of lots.

60kgs went to Phoenix following Monday, for Box lot auction.

The International Post lot was parked with a relative, for future retrieval.

So, not only did I not know what was the composition of the lot when it was knocked down to me, on May 19 2018, I still don't know!

Thanks for that. Let us know when you have a chance please. Always keen to fill some holes in my collection if possible.

This one is definitely philatelic. Sent by a stamp dealer and all the stamps are older issues.

Maybe we need a third class of mail. Philatelic to me has an air of being contrived.

The cover discussed here is "real" mail in that it actually went through the mail, for legitimate purposes, using legitimate stamps and at more or less the correct rate. Better from a purist point of view than philatelic but not quite as good as commercial.

Hi all,

Now to open a big can of worms :lol:

When making a decision as to whether a cover is commercial or not, well, that question is a contentious one, often with as many varied answers as there are cover combinations.

To me, as a ‘stamps on commercial mail cover collector’, commercial covers are usually envelopes, parcels, boxes, tins, crates, tubes or wrappers etc., that are used to enclose or identify a mail article, that has attached to it authorised, and cancelled, postage stamps, to pay for its safe delivery. The mail article is then couriered, sailed, flown, zeppelined, ballooned, shipped, canoed, cameled, etc., through an authorised postal system to safely arrive at its final destination (hopefully, however wreck mail is also a thing).

Now, as to the collectability or otherwise of a commercial mail cover as to when the mail articles were sent through this authorised postal system, there arises the much debated issue of “correct in-period usage” of the postage stamps attached.

What does this refer to? It simply means that the stamps being used on the article being mailed are the correct ones for the date that the mail article is being sent.

To help me to determine when to apply a usage period cut-off to my covers, I have developed 8 rules I follow as best I can when collecting covers :

1. As determined by the authority, and in Australia’s case that’s Australia Post (AusPost) i.e. FDI withdrawal date, or postmarking period for commemorative issues such as occasional events like the Olympic issues, or a conference issue and the likes;

2. Period usage date deadlines i.e. Christmas Issues;

3. When a series issue is replaced by the next in the series i.e. when Series 1 is replaced by Series 2 and so on;

4. When a series (as above) is replaced by a completely new series of issues, the start date that the new series is released;

5. For definitives, when replaced;

6. Postage rate changes;

7. With regards to scarce and elusive stamps on cover – Dated no more that 6 months from release, and where postage rates allow, as the only or predominate stamp on the article, and;

8. Where possible, no make-up postage covers.

Rule No. 8 cannot be a hard and fast rule when non standard mail rates, or long running high value issues are concerned (i.e $20.00 Uluru) as there may no other way to get what you are searching for otherwise. This can, and does, directly affect rule No. 7.

Make up postage covers can also be seen as a type of “space filler” for your cover collection until that right cover comes along, but sometimes they’re all you can find, or even afford for that matter.

You could also find a cover with a rare stamp or stamps attached, a sort-after postmark, or a cover that is addressed to a well known person, or has other significance such as an historical event.

This last type of commercial cover takes us into the realm of Postal History, which in the wider sense a commercial mail cover is also defined.

I hope this is received in the manner it is meant. That is, what I myself look for when collecting commercial mail covers.

Let us know what you look for when collecting covers...

Totally agree, although that 2002 $2.20 National Library, ACT (SG2221, ASC1990) solo is still alluding me (I'll find one somewhere) 8)

The only examples of the $ 2.20 National Library, ACT (SG2221, ASC1990) solo do not meet your criteria. Issued in 2002, but in 2009 there was a $ 2.20 rate to Zone 4.

Look at Phoenix Auctions - Lot 334 in their latest Auction.

2000s International Post Hoard of commercial covers, appear largely 2001, sprinkling of later noted, addressed to Europe, general condition good, almost entirely smaller size articles. (2,000+) 300.00 230.00 R

That works out at 11c - 15c a cover.

Read the description

2,000+ covers mainly from one year. Odds are that there will be clump of the most common, that being the very definition of common. Only 11 International stamps issued that year, 1 being the $ 20 Uluru. 2,000 divided by 1o comes out to 200. So my guess of 500 is probably not far off. I guess we have to wait for whomever purchased the lot to speak up.

I learnt many decades back to assume nothing re auction descriptions. :lol:

Might be a heavily picked over lot, (altho at pennies a cover estimate, can't see how anyone could go wrong even then) and might be a genuine consignment, with all kinds of juicy combos to make the rates. In my younger days I'd grab this myself. :idea:

None of us knows, so email Phoenix please for more details if interested. Total guesswork is not productive for anyone. :mrgreen:

Yep, bought a lot from Mossgreen that is from this same batch/lot. About 500+ x 6 different types only, with a half dozen or so individual other covers aside from the bulk. Paid $300+ for that and not worth it. Steer clear of this lot. Needs to have 10 of each cover taken out and the rest burnt, just like i did with the thousands of leftovers I had...

Hello,
I`ve put together covers I found bearing Australia International stamps. Just have a look if there is anything of interest for you!? I made the pictures with my smartphone, so sorry, if some pictures are not so clear (I hope the stamps can be identified on the pictures!)!
Josto,

Interesting lot of covers. I have sent you an email...

Hello,

I`m sorry! As I normally show pictures on the board via imgur.com , I didn`t think about the problem with commercially used scans! I`ll put them up on photobucket and re-enter them to the thread!

Greetings

Hi all,

As the mod has pointed out, please don't use IMGUR to show your images of International Post covers when posting on this thread as they will be deleted.
All items sought should have a clear PHOTO posted clearly showing exactly what you are seeking. You must use our on-board image hosting, or the free http://www.imageshack.com (or the far less desired - http://www.photobucket.com) to do this, but do ** NOT ** use http://www.IMGUR.com photos - or your listing will be deleted by Moderators. IMGUR do not want their images linked to anything being bought or sold - their clear and stern rules - not ours.
Thanks
