I think we were advised it MAY be possible. It is not a priority but is on the list.

HOWEVER a posted PDF cannot be "read" by google spiders and can hence never be indexed. Ditto a jpeg of any text or article. Google indexing is WHY this board is such a success.

Yes it was. That is the default.

I pointed out to Yuriy a few hours back the average age of members, and asked if he could make it a font size or two larger, and he has. :)

I also asked him to change to the exact font type we use here to make it as similar and familiar looking as we can.
Good thinking Batman. Thank you for doing so. :)

Just a quick post to confirm I can post images directly to the new board now.

Also have the same issue as Rigs with the online box overlapping location (internet is really slow today for me, so quoting Rigs).

Maybe doing something like people have started to do with images - accompany it with a text description or perhaps the title of the PDF.

It would be very useful if cop and paste forms, tables, etc, and formatting was automatic. I thought I had seen this on other PHP platforms.

This has the advantage that the text is still there to be crawled by bots.

There doesn't even seem to be a way to create tables on the new version, which I would have hoped for.

Setting out text copied from other sources, such as cricket scoreboards (and some philatelic stuff), is a nightmare as spacing doesn't work, with mutliple spaces being treated just as one on this present set-up. I'll see how that goes in the new.

These "helpful" suggestions are of course no such thing, when those allegedly ''helping'' (2 on this one matter) cannot be bothered adding data as to WHAT device they are seeing this on, and what browser they are using. Common sense is nowhere near as common as many imagine.

That stuff loads here perfectly on a laptop FWIW.

If the PDF is "treated" by OCR, google can index it. Hwwever, many boards do not permit PDFs due to security concerns. PDF is nt the safest file format...

I've been testing the uploading of images by directly dragging images from my desktop and also clicking on the "add files" button from the "Attachments" folder at the bottom of the message page.

When I click and drag an image from my desktop, to the "message" box, no image reference appaers in the "message" area but it does appear in the "attachments" box. Oddly the image can be seen when I preview the post.

Below is my test. I dragged image "Page 2 of 4.jpg" twice into the message box where the screen grab proves it doesn't show the existence of the images. Notwithstanding this, the "Attachments" box indicates the two images were appended.
Image
A preview proved they are in the message as shown below.

Time to quit. Was told what I should collect.

Hi Rod,

You can drag and drop your images from your desktop directly into the post (message box). You do not have to select the, "Attachments" tab. When you are dragging your image into the message box, you will see your image icon and the message box highlighted in blue dashes.

Image

Once you drop the image, the "Attachments" tab will be highlighted and the file name of your attachment will appear. There, you will have an option of placing the image, "inline" within the post itself or adding the image as an attachment.

I hope that this time I was more helpful. :)

Mark,

2+2 = 4
2 + 1 + _ =4

The former formula is predictable. That's the solution you're providing me. The latter formula is the one I need help with. Ergo, I can enact step 1 and get a reuslt but the intermediate steps are not the ones you are showing me.

1. When I click and drag an image from my computer there is no image box shown in the message area yet the image appears in the preview and.....the name of the image appears in the attachment box.

2. It's been transferred yet it is not documented in the message i.e. I cannot control its exact placement. I proved this with previous screen grabs that did not show an inserted image that showed up in the preview screen.

To exactly place the image, where I wish to have it inserted, within text I have to position the cursor at the insertion point then click on the "Place inline" button in the "Attachment" area.
Time to quit. Was told what I should collect.

FWIW on my iPad the side-bar adjusts automatically according to orientation etc. This feature may be unique to mobile devices or all, I don’t think I checked it on the Mac.

It’s worth remembering that some of us are asking IF facilities are available on a php3 platform, not asking for the system to be rewritten with additional code unique to SB.

Features like copy and paste, tables, and rtf editing beyond what is already shown would be very useful, but if they don’t exist, so be it. I hope I didn’t come across as making a fuss about additional enhancements: that wasn’t the intention at all, and for me, just being able to add images easily is the biggest plus+!

Awesome work everyone, thank you for the financial and time effort that has been put into this.

I tested the search facility. In the current stampboards I typed Transvaal and in the board index search I got 13 results and in the Google search I got 627 results.

In the new board is the search function the Google search? Using the Search on the Board Index page at top right I got 914 matches. More is better so it works.

The ability to sort the search results in the bottom left corner is great.

The hugely improved SEARCH function onboard is something I forgot to mention, as another big leap forward in the new phpBB software we get in a few days.

As we have also moved to far more powerful servers with a ton of grunt, Yuriy was able to load up a totally new search system. Way superior to the usual on board version and way better than our old on board google version.

Best thing is this search works the same for UPPER and LOWER case inputs - old one did not. TEST IT OUT!

The new search engine is more sympathetic. It does take transvaal, Transvaal or indeed TransVaal and return the same number of results.

Lucky, lucky you.

For the rest of the 21,000 members, the current on board one was hopeless, being case sensitive, and was WHY I needed to install the google version.

Allanswood gets 7000 matches and allanswood gets 50. Totally useless.

As can be readily seen (by all except you it appears) the new one is superb. Progress for the rest of us. :!: :!:

Just tried it from a mac with Safari 13.1. Drag and drop is really easy to use. The software prompts you to add a description which is what the board asks us to do. This should increase the number of posts, and the number of posts with images.

Well done to all concerned.

Hi Rod,

Yes, you are correct. :) When you drag and drop the image into the message area it does not show where exactly the image was placed within the message area. You can only see it in the preview window.

To place an image within text, you must position the cursor in the exact place within the text (where you want the image to appear) and drag and drop the image. As you have mentioned. :)

I'll see if it's possible to tweak this. :)

Mark,

Did some testing this morning. More bizarre results.

It's easy to drag and drop as everyone is stating in their posts. Sadly ease of transferring is only a basic first step in preparing an informative post! At least it seems to appeal to the masses.

1. I clicked and dragged two images into the message area where they didn't show up (but appeared in the "attachments" area).
Image
2. A third image seen in a screen grab from my desktop monitor and shown below was dragged across.
Image
Here's the error message I was shown in the "message" area - Invalid file extension: Tobin Type 3.ink. The file is a definitely a jpg:
Image
I tried unsuccessfully numerous times to transfer it. Always the same message.

3. Tried dragging a 6MB 2400 dpi file over. told me it was too large. I'll accept that issue.

4. Now comes the bizarre part. I dragged a third image over which of course didn't show up in the "message" area but did appear in the "Attachments" area.
Image
5. Next step involved selecting the just dragged image's "Place inline" button to have it appear in the "message" area. Of course this worked.
Image
6. Now see what happened when I hit "preview". Although the "message" area showed only one attachment, all three images I had dragged over now appeared.
ImageImage
Here's the entire post:
Image
I won't go into detail regarding all the testing I did with clicking and dragging where I had previously inserted one image with the "place inline" button. Weird things happened with the "preview" screen.
Time to quit. Was told what I should collect.

Hi Rod,

I don't know if you are dragging CorelDRAW files with the extension .ink (by mistake) into the message box and receiving an error, "Invalid file extension..."??? But .jpg or .jpeg, .gif and .png file extensions are fine for the current or new board. :) You should not receive that error message.

Apologies from my end. I had an AHA! moment. The file is a jpg but... If one tries to post a 'shortcut' to it that's definitely not the same as the file.

And some of you wonder why we we were not keen to update things, and it is due to jackass behavior like this.

Do any of you for one moment have any concept of what hosting a MILLION x 6 MEG images would be? Of course you do not.

And in turn a million others sites and blogs all mining that data and urls, to free host on their sites?

No of course not - most will whine and not pay a few bucks for an ImageShack account, but are keen to try and abuse the system here, as long as it does not cost them anything.

I bet if there was a PayPal DONATE button somewhere, so folks could add a few bucks to the many $1000s I have outlaid this month alone, those not clicking on it would be easy to guess in advance.

Lets stop being stupid please, and load images already stored on your devices. :!:

THAT works, and that is what most folks were asking for, for years. We get that happening, increase max size from 900 to 1024, and in just one day, some wants Space Orbiters available to them as well.

If I can disable all this drag and drop games I will, it it means that I am hosting 6 MEG images endless times, just because some genius can't be bothered loading via the usual channels other are happily using.

Now back to normal testing please, for the vast majority of members, who are actually pleased to see some updates here at long last.

Glen – that's not a bad idea, adding a little donation button down the bottom somewhere. Totally optional of course, but most folks around here are generous and every little dollar is the chance for a million, as my dear mother always says!

Drifting off subject here, But I agree with Catweazle.

I have had enormous enjoyment from this bulletin board especially recently.

Many people contribute, by being moderators, for example.

For those of us who don't help out with the running of the board, we could donate if there was an option to do so.

Site Width

I probably missed someone else picking this up but the site is locked to a width of about 1480px so for folks with larger/wider displays its a bunch of extra whitespace either side.

Sure not everybody is tech savvy as some like to point out but nor are we all dinosaurs. At least it does scale down ok on mobile phone screens I can test without forcing side scrolling. The print preview option scales the display properly to screen size at least.

Uploading attachments
The devs will have discussed this, but to add for others wanting to upload PDFs and other document formats to make things easier. Sure it might but it creates a massive security headache as documents from folks can easily contain all sorts of virus and malware payloads.

Its a very costly and difficult task to try to scan for these at the server side and can never be 100% effective. Typically many sites just won't allow it or allow everything.

Personally I prefer being able to link to a Google Doc or Sheet URL instead. Google have for years had their own suite of Office type online applications as alternatives to Microsoft's offering and are free. They may not have the bells and whistles but neither do they have the security flaws to spread malicious payloads.

They have their own Word equivalent as well as Excel spreadsheet equivalent. These would cover most peoples needs here, folks wanting to draft a paper or book of create a database/checklist/catalogue and share it with the board here would find it invaluable. Plus they have collaborative/team editing features without the downside of people uploading malware from their own computers.

Of course image files can often contain these nasties too but server side these are easier to eliminate and protect client machines (ie YOUR computers).

Recency Filtering (UX issue)
At the bottom of the thread display is a drop down filter to limit the number of posts to the Last Day, Last Week, etc. When this filter has nothing to display a stock message is displayed. This takes you out of the thread itself so the filter vanishes making it confusing for some who want to try a different time limit . Sure you hit the browser back button but not everyone will, plus its an unexpected change in the user experience that isn't needed.

The new stampboards feature to upload images directly from computer is awesome & highly convenient :D

I do see the local filename mentioned in the post too below the respective image, this probably can be removed

Looking good.

My suggestions:-

1. would like the ability to "like" posts of others.
2. would like to see a separate folder for "vale" postings of deceased Members. (ie. all in one place).
3. would like much greater choice of emojis.

Regards

#1 and #2 are definitely not going to occur, as pointed out many times before, for excellent reasons.

#3 - I am sure is 'technically' possible - anything is possible. However each time the board gets updated, after adding dozens of custom mods, all are totally lost each upgrade, taking hours to sort out, remember even what was there years ago, and re-install it all at great cost of time and money. Been there, done that. The trick is NEVER to add ANY custom mods that are not essential.

There are quite a few more Emoji options on the new board than we now have. Still not enough for you? :?: :?:

It is not a high school geek board, or a Dating Site, or a Kardashians Fan Club Board etc.

Do we NEED a Pink Bikini one, brown purse one, or a Purple Satan one on a stamp collecting board etc? No, we do not.

Regards the emojis, you can always add a separate image yourself. So much easier now!

Glen
Hi Glen

How true! I was looking for a post I responded to in 2013 but could not find it on the board after a variety of tries. I did notice that the search universe was only about 60% of the total number of posts I have made along the years.

Went to the new board and was directed to it at first try as it was searching in ALL my posts.

Better search, easier image transfer and the same spirit of fun and hepfullnes (OK, not so much fun and camaraderie when discussing Trump, Brexit or guns in America ) that's improving on an already very good formula.

Long live the new Stampbords and thanks a million to you for making it happen.

I posted 2 images to new posts on the new site.

One is a cover that resides on my computer showing the cover in a horizontal position. When I move it to the message it appears in the vertical position. Is there a way to "correct" this?"

The other is a scan of a single stamp and it posted in the correct position.

Adding the relevant link is of course pure basic common sense with such a query.

If you mean these 2, they look perfectly fine to me -
