The Leon Victor Pont Collection of
PIONNEER INDIA AIR MAILS
Lots 1385 to 1544

To learn about Leon Victor Pont (1883-1982) :
https://sparks-auctions.com/auction-33/pont-india-airmail-part-2/

The first lot in this sale features Mr. Pont’s extensive and quite comprehensive personal collection of early India first flights, likely the largest ever assembled. This is being offered in one intact lot (the first of 159 lots) and includes one of each of all the early Indian first flight covers, all being the best examples he had, either for condition, or quality of postmarks, etc.

This sale will also include his correspondence from Stephen Smith, the trophy and medals he won and lots of other interesting Indian first flight material.

Lot 1385:
Mr. Pont’s The Leon V. Pont Extensive Personal Collection of Indian First Flight and Related Covers, 1911 to 1934,

The collection consists of 367 different items, which are the best quality Mr. Pont could find. As he had much duplication of some, he was always careful to keep the best items (post-marks, routes, pilot signatures, etc.) in his personal collection. There are way too many good items to list here, but it should be assumed that the collection includes one of each of most Indian flights and legs known in the period, including several where only a handful were flown.

All items are chronologically displayed in four volumes, with each item conserved in a glassine, accompanied by a sheet of information including number of items carried, postmarks, cachets, and more, often with personal observations and notes, as well as several contemporary newspaper clippings from the flights, photographs, etc.

Rare and High Quality Canada Classic Stamps
and Modern Errors

This sale features hundreds of rare stamps from Canada and the Provinces, as well as rarely seen modern errors. See lots 1-213, 301-648 and 801-894

Lot 34
lot34..jpg
Lot 34 1859 6d Brown Violet Consort, Perforated 11¾, mint with full original gum, slightly disturbed. This lovely stamp has deep rich colour and a crisp impression. A very well centered stamp as well, as even the nicest mint examples are often off-center. There are two clear intersecting guidelines in the bottom left margin, adding to the desirability of this stamp. A truly stunning stamp in all respects, quite fresh and very fine. Accompanied by 1966 and a 2007 Philatelic Foundation certificates, as well as a 2020 Greene Foundation certificate. Surely one of the nicest mint examples of this rare stamp. Rsv. $25,000.

lot897.jpg
Lot 897 - $5 Olive Green Jubilee, mint never hinged, with sheet margin at right, very well centered and fresh, extremely fine. Accompanied by a 2018 Greene Foundation certificate. A truly remarkable stamp in all respects. The $5 Jubilee is often considered the cornerstone to a collection of Canadian stamps, and obtaining an example in pristine condition is difficult to achieve.

lot190.jpg
Lot 190- 1959 - 5c St Lawrence Seaway with Inverted Centre, mint never hinged, fresh and very fine, without any finger print marks sometimes found on these desirable stamps. Accompanied by a 1997 Greene Foundation Certificate.

lot610.jpg
Lot 610- 1978 (50c) Prairie Street Scene with "Ghost Town" Variety, a mint never hinged horizontal pair with sheet margin at left, with both stamps missing the brown inscriptions, telephone poles and lines, and some of the building details. Rare, with only 150 stamps known. The left stamp also shows a fairly substantial "green bug" variety on the right hand building, which is believed to be unique. Very fine. Rsv. $1,800.

Much more to be seen and to add to your collection including Canada and Worldwide postal history, Commonwealth stamps, two large worldwide collections, multiple country collections.

You are right, it is left and we're left shame-faced.

Let's not forget the reason we showed this: it's an exceptional item. Coming up for auction this Thursday, 9AM, New York time. Lot number 96.

Our auctions also include interesting postal history and historical Canadian documents.

Lot 1004 combines high interest in both these categories:
MacDonald.jpg

1867 Letter and Cover Signed by Prime Minister John A. Macdonald, the letter (and its original cover) was mailed to Henry J. Morgan at the Secretary of State's Office in Ottawa on NOV.26.1867. The cover has a lovely House of Commons crown shield handstamp in red plus a red "FREE" between horizontal lines and an Ottawa C.W. datestamp, and is endorsed for free postage by John A. Macdonald (his initials). The letter inside reads "Dear Sir, I think you had better be in no hurry about transferring your services from the Secretary of State's office to the other. Yours faithfully, John A. Macdonald". The rather intimating tone of this letter reveals unambiguously that Macdonald had a very high opinion of Morgan's talents and that he did not want to lose his services. Accompanied by three original relevant documents, one about the Secretary of State's Office (1873) and two written by Morgan in 1875 and 1893, the latter being a form filled by himself describing his government career appointments, salaries, etc. An interesting lot, great for postal historians and historians alike.
