Going Bananas with Stamps (covers, postmarks, etc.)!

Post by stampquestions »

Here is a place to share bananas on stamps (covers, postmarks, etc.) as well as related trivia! I will start with an image of a stamp issued by Rwanda in 1986 featuring a banana plant (It is an herb, not a tree.) as well as the flower and the fruit :
BananasmallRwanda1986.jpg
Please add your own stamps, covers and stories with a banana connection to this thread.

Australia has a thing about big things. We have supposedly tourist attracting Big stuff from Apples to Worms, including fish, a Bogon, a Santa and a Teddy Bear, the Periodic Table and a Slide Rule(!), and my favourite The Big Wine Bottle.

So, naturally we have a big banana. And Australia Post being Australia Post have issued a stamp for it.
banana1.jpg
It's in Coffs Harbour (northern New South Wales) and was constructed in 1964 and is a 13m long (43 feet), 5m high (16 feet), 2.4m wide (8 feet) timber framed ferroconcrete structure and fronts a water park - the biggest theme park between Sydney and the Gold Coast.

But at the gift shop you can buy fresh bananas, dried bananas, chipped bananas, banana jams, banana chutneys and banana pickles, choc-coated frozen bananas, banana splits, banana cake, banana muffins and banana smoothies.

stampquestions, I hope Bananas In Pyjamas fits in with your theme:

Banana is a small town & rural locality in the Shire of Banana, Central Queensland, 46 kilometres west of Biloela. In the 2011 census, Banana had a population of 377 people.

The town was named in the early 1860s. The name derives from an old dun-coloured working bullock, called Banana, used by local stockmen to help them when herding some of the wilder cattle into the yards.

Phoenix say the post office at Banana was opened on 1 September 1861:

I have always wondered about the difference between a fruit, a tuber(not really), a herb, a vegetable, and many other varieties of horticultural items. I am sure that there is someone in stampboard's land who can define the various varieties. Some I am clear about but not them all.
I prefer to collect UK, British Commonwealth esp Pacific area ( not excluding West Indies/Canada ) and Western Europe. At the bottom of my zone of interest is Eastern Europe and communist countries.

The original Coffs Harbour permanent pictorial postmark, inscribed "The banana republic" was introduced on 1 July 1980 (Pictor Marks catalogue number APM 8730) and replaced on 1 May 1990 (APM 22210). No official replacement has been made since and a strike of 2016 was unchanged in design, though the dateline has a new font. I would imagine that the "banana republic" slogan was dropped as being less than complimentary!

The postmark of Carnarvon WA 6701 was introduced on 2 September 1991 (APM 23720) and was still in use in 2018. A strike of 2006 appeared unaltered (after 15 years?). The 2011 strike showed a new dateline and the most recent shows a further dateline variation not to mention a significant shift to its positioning.

Would Sweden's 2009 claymation bananas belong in the same category of "charming bananas" as BigSaint's Australian bananas in pajamas?

The stamps shown below do not depict bananas, but they are related to the topic: they are Banana Levy stamps from Queensland which were issued between 1927 to 1961 (according to Dave Elsmore's catalogue).

These aren't mine and the images were found online (hence the different sizes):

Not as "apeeling" as those nice old commercial covers but here are the bananas from Guinea's 1959 fruit issue:

BananaGuinea1959.jpg

Note how the trunk of the banana looks more like a big stalk of grass than the bark of a tree.

I have several stamps in my collections show fruits look like banana but I am not sure they are banana or other resemble fruit:

These stamps issued for use in French Indochina in 1937 to publicize the International exhibition held in Paris in that year. Stamps with same designs were issued for 20 other French colonies. In both stamps there are fruits look like banana, what do you think?

Indochina 1937 Colonial Exhibition 1.jpg

Indochina 1937 Colonial Exhibition 4.jpg

This stamp, issued by Rwanda in 1980, shows the painting "We Hail Thee Mary" by Paul Gauguin (1848-1903). I read in several sites that the fruits on the bottom are "Red Tahitian Banana" although not look like banana. In other painting by Gauguin "The Bananas" there are very resemble fruits. I enclose the painting:

Four same design stamps with different values and colors were issued for use in Reunion in 1947. I read in one site that they show Banana herb. Is it correct?

Most Pacific collectors would know this one, a fairly common stamp. It was one of several definitive stamps issued in 1955 and 1956 to celebrate various local industries. It shows workers processing bananas after harvesting.

The 1965 ‘banana’ stamp from Montserrat includes the Annigoni portrait, in a classic design by Michael and Sylvia Goaman.

For a Stampboards thread on the Annigoni portrait see here:

More bananas from Cameroun--this time the 1959 issue depicting harvesting bananas and then loading them on a ship using what looks like a specialized kind of conveyer:

I finally came across the Tongan banana stamps that I purchased from the philatelic bureau which was located in the Treasury Building in Nuku’alofa, Tonga in the 1970s. They issued banana-shaped peel and stick stamps between 1960 and 1984 which varied considerably over time. Here I show two very similar yet quite different sets.

On May 12, 2011, Sweden’s postal service issued a set of five ice cream themed stamps.

One of them, a wide format coil stamp, bears a graphic illustration of a mouth watering banana split.

It was reportedly nominated (but not shortlisted) for the `Stamp of the Year´ Nexofil Awards.

I think you spotted a very challenging tomato stamp for me to add to my list. Thanks!

How about stamps on bananas?

This detail is from a 1967 magazine advertisement for Chiquita Brand bananas in the U.S. Can anybody identify the stamps? Are they genuine?

Chiquita was a brand owned by the United Fruit Company (UFC), founded in the U.S. in 1899. Here is another one of their advertisements.

The UFC issued its own ‘stamps’ similar to telegraph stamps: this one was found searching Google Images.

Since the early 20th century, Honduras and Guatemala especially have been called ‘Banana Republics’, due to the alleged influence of the UFC on local politics. Despite this, or maybe because of it, there are not as many banana themed stamps from Honduras and Guatemala as might be expected. One from Honduras is displayed earlier in the thread. Here is one from Guatemala.
