The board has been getting absolutely hammered by bots over the past few weeks, which can be difficult to mitigate. This happens, and is usually temporary. If the issue continues, I'll have to see about implementing a more permanent solution, such as DDoS protection from Cloudflare.

Sorry folks; I'm working on it.

That may explain what happened to my blog at the weekend. I had an unprecedented 11,385 visitor views in 24 hours, which unexpectedly tipped me over the 6 million mark.

Try now Ian. The link in my signature was using "www" when it should have been plain.

Hi fellow stamp boarders, I have an issue with viewing my posts all day. When I try to view them I get a message saying the search cannot be performed and that the error is logged.

I have no problem viewing new posts but not my own posts. Anyone got any ideas?

Yes it happens from time to time.

Also the Google search is working but the top one was not when I tried it.

This should be in the 'send Yuiy a Pizza' thread.

Why I am getting error log message?

When I try to view my posts, it says ...

Agree - small glitch in our on board search system and 'view my posts' feature.

Use the site specific Google search box at the base of each page in the meantime - or if this very tiny glitch is making your life unlivable as some suggest it is (!) - send Yuriy a Pizza to get it onto his fast track list!

I was just looking at the Admin log summary of downtime and outages for stampboards for the past year or two, since our super MAJOR upgrade in mid 2020. We moved from the flaky and buggy and erratic servers in Oklahoma, and I see we have since had almost ZERO downtime or outages, due to our new robust and large private servers in the USA, with relay back-ups, and load sharing on both coasts there.

We have logged just a few minutes a month downtime since then. An incredible achievement, given the large user and visitor traffic we have here, and the vast data storage and back-up now of 11 million messages.

Facebook and YouTube has literally been out of action way more than we have in that time! My BANK website here is down regularly. As are most Stamp Auction sites. stampboards is as solid as a rock.

'Marshalrusty'- or Yuriy in New York, as always keeps it all ticking along very smoothly in the background, and is just about to update us to the very latest phpBB software, with even more features. He sourced the hosting company for our servers after days of research, and chose SUPERBLY, I am sure all will agree. :!:

AND we have expanded our storage to an ever larger server system, seeing we now have about TWO MILLION images self-hosted on our own SUPER SECURE servers now - we are truly the Wikipedia of stamp collecting. 8-)

We are the WORLD'S number one Stamp Bulletin Board because of our millions of google indexed images, and the vast depth of ELEVEN MILLION posts, and that costs serious money to do, and to back-up robustly and securely forever.

Yuriy is not even a stamp collector - he just likes us, as a quirky fun sideline project for him, and has helped us out for well over a decade or more here, so I'd again encourage ALL members to do your bit each year, and fund a pizza and some beers etc via PayPal in ANY currency to - yuriy [at] rusko.org (Think of it as your oblique Stampboards Membership Fee, or Crowd Funding!)

Just a few 100 generous Community minded members sending only a modest $10 or $20 pays for a lot of his time, and shows he is appreciated by those here, who benefit from HIS super back-room skills. Please do it NOW. CROWD FUNDING at its finest. A new issue stamp set at the PO costs you that! :)

Think of just how many valuable things you have learned, shared, swapped etc, and the many new friends made here. All of them worth $US20 or so a year, I am certain. :!: :!:

All the US dedicated server hosting is at my cost, and always will be, and that runs to many $US1,000s a year, but please do show your small personal appreciation for the tech whizz who keeps that all ticking along with no glitches in the background all year. He has quietly in the background saved us from disaster MANY times over our long history, trust me. Spam attacks, DDOS attacks, hacking attempts, and all kind of tech malfunctions etc, all foiled, as he knows what he is doing. :!:

Yuriy is one of the head coding and design developers globally of this phpBB board skeleton, used by millions of Bulletin Boards worldwide, most far smaller than this of course, and has customised the back-end of this version entirely for our needs - larger easy to read fonts given our age demographic, added many different navigation buttons, very special attention to the easy adding of LARGE images, and many other features not immediately obvious to the casual user.

I have never sent a text message in my life - true, and have never used Facebook or Twitter or Instagram, or had a Zoom meeting etc, so if you relied on my ''tech skills'', there would be a totally blank screen facing you right now!

There Are NO Free Lunches In Life - so, please PayPal Yuriy a Pizza and some beers! yuriy [at] rusko.org .... PEOPLE POWER. 8-)

Add a note here you have done that if you wish - but even if it stays private, please do assist, we/you owe Yuriy a LOT. :!:

I resist the now WEEKLY sales pitches from global ad companies aiming to 'OPTIMISE' this site with endless intrusive pop up ads, distracting 'click bait' links all over, ads inside every post, IP tracking, nasty cookie tracking requirements, and all sorts of sneaky bells and whistles that would make me rather rich - but drive most users here insane! THEY see the huge traffic here, and that is their bread and butter.

I sign up to NONE of that, as I personally hate all of those intrusions, and assume others do too. If they add that stuff in, I make a fortune, and then can offer an 'ad free stampboards' option at $US50 a year, and many would leap at that too, and I make another fortune!

So, get ahead of the pack, and PayPal Yuri $US20-$US25 now, and you are more than revenue neutral! It is a simple choice really. yuriy [at] rusko.org :!:

We get all the benefits of Stampboards with no membership fees. When things go noticeably wrong, the motto is "Yuriy will fix it" — and he does! It is a small price for us to send him pizza money, but it helps him know he's appreciated.

In a similar vein, I dare say we all use Wikipedia, some of us occasionally, some/most of us frequently. I am in the "frequent user" category. That access also comes with no membership fees. Occasionally Wikipedia includes a modest "help fund me" box. There is no threat or penalty if you ignore the appeal. But it is a small recognition of our benefit and appreciation if we make a contribution to its costs. So tonight I did exactly that when a modest "help fund me" box appeared at the top of a Wikipedia page I had just accessed. My submission was acknowledged:

The Guardian newspaper has a similar voluntary sub model.

They are quite clever - they cheerfully tell me I've visited their website '74 times in the past year', and please make a small donation to support our services.

What I find there is often of great use to me, so I happily PayPal them some funds. 'There is no such thing in life as a Free Lunch'.

Such as this article -

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/aug/31/australia-p ... sults-loss

I very often am searching for articles, and arrive at New York Times or Financial Review or Washington Post type websites etc, etc, that DEMAND I take a trial sub to continue. I never do, and move onto the next site who has that info free. :!:

I bet that brings in a lot of money to The Guardian - a very smart business model.

Likewise, thanks to those supportive members here who PayPal a Pizza and Beer to Yuriy now and again - it keeps things running smoothly in the background, at a modest cost to regular users, so WIN-WIN all round. :)

Just to keep up to date with reporting of problems (apparently denial of access once again), I couldn't access Stampboards for some time during the early afternoon today, although other websites were available as usual. Times shown are AEST:

Several alternative attempts produced:
3.12.24pm
3.12.24pm

I have come back now 5.26.39pm and access is again available. :D

My very large bank was down for an hour, despite their 100s of techies, and $ millions of infrastructure, so such things are actually commonplace.

Ditto Australia Post - their website tracking and in store online services are down very often. Fact of life.

The technical reason for this short issue was nothing to do with DDOS -

The node "eccomp13-havp18" your VPS is on was under heavy load for about an hour. That load issue has been addressed, and you shouldn't experience any further downtime.

We are still experiencing very heavy bot traffic. There is currently a substantial spike. The site is doing okay due to various previously-implemented mitigation measures, but the load is super high.

I am actively working on implenting CloudFlare's DOS protection to solve this problem on a more permanent basis.

The upgrade I referenced earlier in this topic is nearly ready for deployment. I will get that out later this week and many of these issues should be solved permanently.

I am happy to say that the DDoS mitigation measures already deployed appear to be working, and the load on the server has been substantially decreased.

More details to come :)

I got that when I made a post, so I backtracked and posted again only to find that the first worked fine; the error was in reloading the page after the post.

It’s nothing serious and resolves itself.

I've been getting that message on and off lately too. I've incurred a few unintended double posts while waiting for the original to load, but I've edited the second post in each case to rescue it and turn it into something relevant.

Please note: this is not a complaint, just a factual report.

Roger - yes we are well aware of this message appearing now and again.

Members reporting it here 3 times in a few hours is not necessary at all. :!:

Yuriy as he stated, is working on fixing these little bugs, once and for all. :)

A huge job, as there are many issues to deal with here.

I am aware that there are issues with the site, and am working with the hosting company to get them resolved. Unfortunately, these seem to all be caused by their setup, and they're not sure what's happening.

There are now 5 different issues opened with them, and I have been pushing them from all fronts to figure out what's happening. We'll get it fixed.

EDIT: I have enabled some more aggressive DDoS protections. This will hopefully speed up the site, but may have unintended consequences. Please report any errors.

The next step is to use CloudFlare.

Thanks Yuriy = Marshalrusty, we appreciate you!

The recent level of Denial of Service has been frustrating, with long wait times between consecutive posts.

Another tangible thank you is on its way ;)

Thank you to everyone who has sent pizza money; it pays my rent :)

CloudFlare is now enabled on stampboards. This should provide significant DDoS protection going forward, and hopefully reduce some load on the server and speed things up. Only time will tell how much it will help.

Seems that now we’re all back, Cloudflare may be having problems? Hopefully only a temporary glitch.

I am trying to convince the host to set up a new server and to move the whole site over to it. That is a ridiculous solution, but they seem completely unable to fix this problem, and their setup is sufficiently esoteric that my knowledge isn't useful in tracking down the issue.

In the meantime, the login issues you have been experiencing should hopefully be fixed.

Okay, so their "server team" is now working on the problem from their end - makes you wonder who was working on it previously - and I'm seeing a significant decrease in reported server load, which is the core of the issue. I'm not sure what they did (I'll definitely be asking), but this is the first time I've seen the numbers come down to reasonable levels since this problem started.

As we're now connecting through CloudFlare, whenever the server is down (for any reason), you will get that CloudFlare failure page. That's normal. Although, of course, the server shouldn't be down, so you shouldn't be seeing that page often.

Please report any issues you're still experiencing either here or by email to me.

Thanks for your patience.

Sigh, that's going to be a complication due to the CloudFlare setup. Luckily, I can fix it, just need to tweak the caching settings correctly. Standby.
